Layne found the sound and power of Toyota’s 4.5-litre V8 diesel too hard to resist. The fact that it came wrapped in a LandCruiser was the icing on the cake
Toyota’s LandCruisers are the only factory supplied V8 diesel powered 4X4s we can buy in Australia and their popularity seems to know no bounds.
This particular beast grabbed Layne by the short and curlies earlier this year and he’s lovin’ it!
Under the bonnet is Toyota’s 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 and if you’ve driven one you’ll know that this engine IS the LandCruiser’s personality – it defines the driving experience.
Layne’s elected to keep the under-bonnet mods to a minimum – for now – with a factory snorkel supplying the cool air and a 3″ ‘straight through’ exhaust clearing the spent gasses. An engine tune is on the cards according to Layne.
It’s a similar story with the drivetrain. The 79 series is built tough and this one is stock as a rock from the clutch plate through to the rear axles. Layne’s added some slotted and drilled disc brake rotors to add a bit of bite to the Cruiser’s braking.
The barwork has been supplied by TJM and consists of a 63mm tube steel front bar, with brush bars and side steps. Custom bash plates protect the rear diff lock actuator and the radiator from off-road knocks and scrapes.
Layne is currently running 17 x 8.5 Method race wheels and has them wrapped in 295/70/17 Mickey Thompson P3 ATZ aggressive all-terrain tyres. Suspension is all OME with Layne opting for 400kg leaf packs in the rear.
Out the back there’s a two-piece canopy that bolts onto the tray. It’s part dog box and part storage, with a slide out BBQ, drawers, a fridge, a roof top tent and a dual wheel carrier. When not in use Layne can remove it all or just the section he isn’t going to be using.
As you can see from the pics, Layne isn’t afraid to get his Cruiser dirty or bogged!
