Nathan’s 1990 Toyota LandCruiser 80 Series Off-Roader

As far as Nathan is concerned the venerable 80 series is the toughest 4WD that money can buy. His money bought this one and the build is extensive!

So extensive that it’s difficult to know quite where to start but we’ll give it a go.

Under the 80’s long bonnet sits Toyota’s 4.2-litre straight-six 1HD-T turbo-diesel. It’s a solid lump and a healthy one, thanks to the full re-built it has had while in Nathan’s care. All reciprocating components have been balanced, the head has been gas flowed and ceramic coated large-bowl pistons have been fitted.

353015849371340221 - IMG_0651The ‘new’ engine is now fitted with a Gturbo Bad Boy Extreme turbo, a DCS 1000Nm clutch, a PWR radiator and a Cross Country Ultimate top-mount intercooler. It breathes through a 4″ snorkel and Moonlight Fabrication’s airbox.

Nathan has left the fuel-injecton pump and injectors stock “for now”, but you get the feeling “for now” really means “not for much longer”.

353015849371340221 - IMG_0754An extensively modified engine requires an extensively modified drivetrain and Nathan has delivered on that front. Both the 5-speed manual and the transfer case have been rebuilt, as have both diffs, which are now fitted with a pair of ARB air-lockers.

The front diff housing has been completely braised for added strength and a ‘part-time’ kit has been fitted to the transfer case to make life easier on the front-end componentry.

353015849371340221 - IMG_0753When hitting the trails hard, there’s a full compliment of bar work to keep the 80’s panels straight. Up front there’s a steel bull bar that has been modified to accept a low mount electric winch. Steel rock sliders look after the sills and out the back sits an MHM rear bar with twin wheel carrier.

Nathan hasn’t spared the horses with the suspension either. His 80 sits on 4″ lifted EFS coils and runs 12″ travel 2.5″ Radflo remote reservoir bypass shocks all round. Wild Customs supplied the front radius arms, while the Superior Engineering boys are responsible for the panhard rods, adjustable lower control arms and competition spec tie rod and track bars.

Tyres are 315/75/16 BFG KM2 muddies on Mickey Thompson Lock Black alloys.
