David’s 2008 SAS Toyota HiLux Custom

This isn’t David’s first Lux. He’s owned earlier ones and has grown to appreciate the ease with which they can be modded. He bought the 2008 wanting something newer and more comfortable and then the modifying bug bit.

We reckon it was a big bug and it bit him hard!

As you can tell from the pics, this is no ordinary 08 HiLux, but we’ll get to that funny looking front suspension setup shortly. Let’s start at the front.

352683868721365430 - FB_IMG_1475311646982Under the bonnet is Toyota’s 3.0 D4D four-pot turbo-diesel and David’s tweaked it a little by fitting 15 per cent larger injectors, a snorkel and a 3″ Scott’s Rods exhaust system. An upgraded turbo is on the short list.

The drivetrain has been modified with the addition of 4.56 nitro diff gears, a Yukon Grizzly front locker, an ARP axle stud kit and freewheeling front hubs. Just the sort of gear you need if you want to run 35″ tyres reliably.

Which brings us to the suspension. The HiLux’s adequate but limiting Independent Front Suspension has been turfed in favour of a solid axle swap (SAS). The solid axle uses a custom Toyota 80 Series diff centre, a JMW diff housing and is located with Wild Custom’s radius arms.

352683868721365430 - FB_IMG_1443945742623The rear end received similar treatment and now features 80 Series suspension, an 80 Series diff centre and adjustable arms.

David’s currently running Kings 12″ coil over shocks up front and Kings 10″ coil overs in the rear.

How does it all work we hear you ask? They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

352683868721365430 - DSC_0272The Lux is engineered and legally runs 35″ Maxxis Bighorns, which are run for daily work duties and on the weekend when hitting the tougher tracks with his partner.

Keeping the Lux’s panels straight, for as long as possible, is a Lukeys Custom’s steel front bar, a set of Dirty Custom’s sliders and some Kings Custom’s underbody plates.
