Mark’s Toyota LandCruiser ‘The Burger’ – Bought and built to do the lot.

Why did you choose this particular 4X4?

Previously I had a nicely decked out 80 series which I moved on when I was purchasing a house. I spent several years without wheels, (well a Vespa!!!) Once I was back in a situation of getting another car, I wanted to move up to something with air bags, and a few more creature comforts. This put me in the market for either a Nissan Patrol or a 100 series Cruiser. The Cruiser won due to on-road drive, dual airbags, ABS and it came with a lot of goodies already added. For the price, I couldn’t say no. I knew how reliable the 100 series LandCruisers were, along with their build quality and it has proven itself.

What have you built this 4X4 to do?

‘The Burger’ was purchased with the intention of it being a Master of Everything! It had to be…..
A good daily driver …tick…
A comfy people mover …tick…
A weekend warrior …tick…
An awesome longer distance tourer …tick…
An escape machine …tick…
Reliable …tick…
So far it has fulfilled all my requirements.

Where have you taken it and what are some of your favourite tracks/destinations?

The list for where I’d love to take it is much longer than the places I have seen, (I need to change that don’t I?). However, some of the awesome stuff I have seen has been large chunks of the Victorian High Country, Deua National Park, the coast line from Melbourne to Adelaide including the sand trek from Robe to Beachport. Local Victorian wheeling spots like Tallarook and Gembrook, also parts of the Brindabella National Park in Canberra.

Some great memories have been camping up at Mt Pinnabar, watching the sunset and then the sunrise without another sole around, stunning! Camping at some of the huts around the Victorian High Country, Refuge Hut 3 and Bluff Hut are my favourites thus far. Also floating down the Deua River on lilos while sipping a cold beer was a time I won’t forget. But there’s plenty more to come in the future.

Would you set it up the same again and if not, what would you change?

The car, for me, is pretty well set-up for what I’m doing right now, it pretty well exceeds my level of driving. Being twin locked, winch, muddies and bar work all round, it has the perfect base.

I’d love to drop in a Toyota V8 diesel or a Chev V8 diesel, add a few creature comforts like a Travel Buddy Oven, a couple of gauges to monitor the engine, get more led lighting around the car, a better drivers seat and finally a more powerful sound system would be on the cards. This will all have to wait though.

What future mods do you have planned?

My next mod will be an LED light bar of some sort, I’m trying to work out if it’s best to mount it on the bull bar or up on my roof bars. I’m also on the lookout for a dual rear jerry can holder for the back of the Kaymar bar. At times, I’ve had jerry cans inside the car which isn’t ideal, so throwing them on the back bar would be better. That’s a much cheaper option than getting a long range petrol tank.

Is there anyone that you’d like to thank for their help/assistance with building your 4X4?

My fiancé, the fact she is still able to turn a blind eye every time I ‘need’ to spend money on the car. Bless her!!!!
