Owner’s Thoughts

I have owned my 2006 TD42 Patrol wagon for 7 years and have driven it over 130,000km. It has never broken down and is the most reliable car I have ever owned. It is an ‘old school’ diesel so not as powerful as some of the more modern offerings but the reliability and toughness make up for this.

My only real complaint is the lack of an Auto offering with this engine. An auto would have been really good. If anything was to happen to mine I would buy another one in a heartbeat as I don’t think anything else matches it for ability and reliability.

It is used to tow a 2.5T Off-road Van, daily driving, Mum’s taxi, hunting wagon, off-roader and everything in between. For an old school diesel it is quite frugal, returning 12.5L/100km, which is not bad for a 3T+ 4WD. With coils all round yet retaining solid axles, it is comfortable on road and capable Off-road. The level of mods you do will depend on what you intend to use one for, if doing a lot of Off-road driving, some diff lockers and suspension would be a good choice.

As with all 4WDs there will be compromises, but with the 4.2 Patrol there are few. You may not get there first, but you will always get there!
