Land Rover Extends Production Of Defender – But Only A Little

Land Rover has officially confirmed that the axe will fall on Defender production in January 2016 but an anonymous source has told the Birmingham Post that the Defender has received a brief stay of execution, with production possibly running in to February or even March next year.

The brief reprieve is simply to run the line long enough to satisfy the bulging order book.

With UK farmers buying multiple new Defenders and storing them for later use, tuning and customisation businesses such as ‘Twisted’ placing orders for hundreds of Defenders and a blossoming cult following among the self proclaimed intelligentsia in many markets, the volume of orders has taken Land Rover by surprise.

We do know that it really won’t be anything like the current Defender which has been living on borrowed time for a decade or more. But as the over-flowing order book proves, there is still plenty of demand for a vehicle that is simple, charming and tough.
